Hi everyone,
James and I have been trying to come up with a name for our project and have a few ideas. Any feedback we could get back on these would be tremendously helpful.
We were thinking about a name that could combine the idea of mathematics and a living thing. We really like the word ARITHMETIC because it deals with a branch of mathematics that is used on a daily basis, such as simple division, subtraction and multiplication and deals with quantity.
Here's the Encyclopedia Britannica's definition:
"Arithmetic (a term derived from the Greek word arithmos, “number”) refers generally to the elementary aspects of the theory of numbers, arts of mensuration (measurement), and numerical computation (that is, the processes of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, raising to powers, and extraction of roots)."
We're not sure, however if this word is compelling enough to be the entire title so we were thinking we might combine it with a word that implied a living thing, like "Arithmetic Breathing" or "The Arithmetic Organism".
Another idea we had referred back to our earlier research. During the first few weeks we were researching ratios and one of the questions we asked ourselves was what is in between the ratio, or what makes up the (:) of the ratio number:number. From this we thought of the name "In Between Ratios". Though, we like the idea behind it, it feels a little dry as a name.
If anyone has a suggestion or a preferred direction we would appreciate any help.
On a different topic, we realize that we really need to improve our subject images since we failed to provide a real feeling for what it would be like when the exhibit actually functions and we're going to start over on this. Would fully rendered illustrations be an acceptable format for executing this, or would a combination of photoshop and video be better?
Thanks for the help,
Rachel and James

you did beautiful and eloquent work, congratulations. Your piece and Kris & Grace is the caliber of work I expect.
ReplyDeletemy two cents for the name:
—arithmos
—a:rythmos (playing off the idea of mathematics, rhythm and the in-between)
—arithmetic breathing
you're definitely on the right track
thank you
c
for the subjective images: just find more angles of your model, psd & video are the way to go,
ReplyDeletenot illustrations. The idea is to document the piece itself and find immersive POV's within it.
Illustrations are more suitable for diagramatic purposes (as in floor plan etc)
Hi Carolina,
ReplyDeleteI'm writing here since I'm not sure how to contact you besides this blog. I've already sent an email to you but I got no reply. I know you're busy but I was afraid of you are not using art center account. Since I don't have any contact from classmates or Jaime, I couldn't contact them neither. I know you're busy, but I would really appreciate if you check out art center account email or please let me know other contacts, either phone number or different email address. Thank you.
Best
